Lady Lex boasts historical past
      Despite repeated attacks during World War II, the USS Lexington never sank, prompting Japanese propagandist Tokyo Rose to dub the aircraft carrier "The Blue Ghost." The Blue Ghost lives on today. The retired aircraft carrier, illuminated at night with ghostly blue lighting, is permanently docked at 2914 N. Shoreline Blvd., on Corpus Christi Beach in Corpus Christi.

Art Center is place to be on First Fridays
      Visitors and residents looking for original art in a variety of mediums as well as classes in many of those mediums will find it all at the Art Center for the Islands, 323 N. Alister St. The center, a nonprofit organization serving Mustang and Padre islands, just completed its 10th anniversary celebration in 2006.

JELM Center offers spring visitors array of services
      W ith only a month left to go in its prog r a m m i n g , the Joint Effort Leisure Ministry (JELM) Center is a happening place. It is operated by volunteers from Community Presbyterian Church (the umbrella under which the center operates) and Winter Texans, and offers a variety of activities, trips, entertainment, as well as health and fitness programs from November through March.

Waterfront park is place to fish, play
      W hether you're after fishing, soccer, entertainment, a picnic, ship watching in the Corpus Christi Ship Channel or just sitting back and enjoying the view, Roberts Point Park has something for you. The park was built as a joint effort between civic volunteers and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Volunteers supplied much of the work; TPWD supplied major funding.

Museum celebrates surfing history on Texas coast
      S urfing on the Texas coast goes back more than 70 years, and the Texas Surf Museum in Corpus Christi celebrates every minute of it. The museum, which opened in June 2005, explores the history of surfing in general and focuses specifically on wave riding along the Texas coast.

Texas State Aquarium features new exhibit
      O ne of the newest exhibits at the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi displays seahorses, shrimp and various kinds of crabs that live in the Laguna Madre and Padre Island areas. Living Shores, which opened in April, also includes small pools where visitors can touch sea creatures including hermit crabs, pencil urchins and lightning whelks.

Track offers simulcast, live dog and horse racing
      T he thrill and excitement of pari-mutuel greyhound racing can be enjoyed just minutes from Port Aransas. The Corpus Christi Dog Track is a year-round facility featuring matinee and evening races. Live greyhound races, Wednesday through Sunday, are mixed with live simulcast greyhound and horse races broadcast via satellite starting at 11 a.m. daily except Mondays through 2006.
