that gives visitors first-hand looks at life aboard a city at sea.
The Lexington is a National Historic Landmark and museum permanently docked on Corpus Christi Beach.
Impressive new firepower will be on display in spring of 2008. The museum has obtained two twin 5-inch gun mounts from the USS Des Moines, which was scrapped in Brownsville. These are the kind of gun mounts that were on board the Lex during World War II. They will be placed on the flight deck of the Lexington.
The guns, which weigh more than 100,000 pounds, are considered the best intermediatecaliber naval used during the war. They were designed to fire at surface and aircraft targets, and their high rate of fire made them awesome weapons for aircraft carriers during the war.
Officials said they anticipated having them up by March 15.
The Lex is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day from Labor Day to Memorial Day and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Memorial Day to Labor Day, except for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, when it's closed.
