Get ‘plugged in’ at Computer Center
Plenty of computers are available for use at the Port Aransas Computer Center. The center is open every day, but Sunday. The Port Aransas Computer Center, 430 N. Alister St., has 26 computers for public use, recently upgraded and updated, and all connected to the Internet and to a laser printer. A scanner and two plug-in photo card readers also are available.
Visitors can now upload programs and games to the system either to do some work or play a favorite game. Send email, surf the Web, play games, shop online, work with photos, make reservations, write resumes, scan documents and photos, print mailing labels, take online classes, achieve TABC certification, print boarding passes, or use a flash drive and much more.
Individual computer instruction is available and classes are scheduled on request. For a donation of $15 for one and a half hours of instruction you will receive one-on-one instruction at the center. To schedule a class, call (361) 749-4011.
The computer center, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, provides wireless service (Wi-Fi) inside the building and outside in the parking lot. Laptop tables are available inside.
The center is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 12-4 p.m. on Saturdays. Regular volunteers work one two-hour shift each week; substitutes take a twohour shift when a regular volunteer can’t come in.
To volunteer, fill out a new volunteer form, or for more information, call 749-4011.
The center depends on volunteers to keep its door open (there is no paid staff), but donations are accepted (CDs, DVDs and floppy disks are $1, 2-Gigabyte flash drives are $12 and headphones are $5). A set of headphones can be borrowed for a returnable deposit of $3.
