Area talent is showcased at Port Aransas Art Center

New exhibits open at the First Friday receptions each month. New exhibits open at the First Friday receptions each month. The art culture in Port Aransas is thriving thanks to the Port Aransas Art Center.

The art center, located at 323 N. Alister St., holds a gallery and a gift shop, offers classes and workshops for adults, camps and classes for children and families, as well as First Friday receptions.

The receptions, held the first Friday of every month, mark the opening of a new show. Works in the First Friday shows remain on display and for sale for the remainder of the month; coming down in time to make way for the next exhibit. Folks who attend the receptions may enjoy light hors d’oeuvres, wine and live music while viewing the artwork.

The art center is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with more than 400 members and more than 225 artists who show their work in the gallery.

The art center also sponsors events throughout the year. Schedules may be found at the center and in weekly editions of the South Jetty in the “art center calendar” and in stories about the events.

A new 4,000-square-foot, one-story building is now under construction at 104 N.Alister St.

It is expected to open in September and will be nearly twice the size of the existing building. The new building will provide more classroom space and accommodate larger audiences to attract nationally known artists.

Corporate sponsors help fund the art center on a monthly basis. Sponsorships, at $1,000 per month, may be shouldered by an individual or business or shared by two or more individuals or businesses.

Look for the art center calendar in weekly issues of the South Jetty for information about ongoing and new classes.
