Explore marine life at center

Estuary Explorium

If you are looking to learn about the estuarine environment in Port Aransas, look no further.

The Estuary Explorium exhibit at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) Marine Science Education Center showcases the transition from ocean to estuary and the importance of estuaries to the environment.

The center has seven aquaria that feature marine habitats that range from saltwater marshes to the floor of the Gulf of Mexico.

Located at the Marine Science Education Center, 855 E. Cotter Ave., the center hosts more than 40,000 visitors a year and is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

The center includes artifacts such as the skull and jawbone of a whale.

Visitors also may get a snapshot of research and marine life by observing exhibits such as the “rock jetty,” “black mangrove” and the “mud bottom/benthic.” UTMSI scientists also have their research on display.

The gift shop is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., every day, and closed for lunch from 12 to 1 p.m. Souvenirs including apparel, toys, books and jewelry are on sale.

UTMSI was established in 1941 and is Texas’ first permanent marine laboratory.
