Work has begun on a 3,300-square-foot expansion at the William R. “Bill” Ellis Library, and officials are hoping to be finished in October or November.

Librarian Geanette Dailey said the library will remain open to the public, but with limited space available to sit while construction is underway.

“Books and DVDs have been moved around to make room for the expansion and renovation project,” she said. “Most non-fiction books have been boxed and will be stored during construction. The perimeter shelving is being removed and will also be stored.”

The expansion is needed to provide increased children’s and teen’s areas, additional shelving space in all areas and more space for computers, personal laptops, e-readers and other devices, according to Dailey.

While the city has pulled together enough money to pay for expanding the building, more funds still are needed to finish out the interior. Anyone who’d like to make a donation may call the library at (361) 749-4116.
